What is a rider?

A rider is a coverage and/or change added to a policy. The information about the additional coverage(s) is usually typed up on a separate piece of paper, which is attached to the copy of your basic policy. Some examples of riders are: 1) Multiple Indemnity (which provides coverage for accidental death or dismemberment), 2) Waiver of Premium (which allows the insured(s) to skip premiums during extended hospitalization), 3) Additional Coverage (which provides coverage in addition to the basic policy), and 4) Exclusion (which is a pre-existing condition that is not covered by the basic policy).
